Dreaming of Restaurant Recipes

It was the end of May, and the beginning of the last summer with my daughter, who had just graduated from high school. I had all these plans for things to do with her, places and events for us to remember as we changed from being mother and daughter to being friends. She came in during supper, glowingly happy, and clutching an envelope in her hand. She had been accepted into the early admission program, and was going away to college in just one week. One week. Of course I was happy for her, and made preparations to buy all those things that I had planned for us to get together in the middle of August.

The week went by all too quickly, and then I was by myself in the house. I had made all these arrangements to have my whole summer off, and now I was alone and without any real plans. It was hard not to be disappointed over the change, and the empty house just seemed depressing. The next few days were occupied with ice cream and some of my favorite old movies, the ones everyone calls "chick flicks", and used to be called "tear jerkers". Not wanting to wander around in the empty house, I called on a friend or two and went out to eat most nights of the next two weeks or so.

It wasn't exactly the bonding that I had hoped to do with my now nearly adult daughter, but it was fun. I also remembered how wonderful and unusual some of the food is at the restaurants, even in our little town. In my head I started thinking of how I might make some of those restaurant recipes.

It was a Friday night, and I went to bed late after watching another old tear jerker. Maybe I had eaten too late, but my dreams were jumbled sequences of potatoes being chased by cheese sauce, and giant broccoli swaying in the wind with shrimp doing the hula. I woke up and knew what I wanted to do for the rest of the summer: chase after the food that had been chasing me. I would visit some of my favorite restaurants in order to get the restaurant recipes for the food that I could dream about. What a great summer it would be! But then, maybe I was still dreaming. Asking for restaurant recipes might not be so easy, as I could think that chefs might want to keep their best food tips secret. So I went back to bed, and dreamed of chasing lots of papers with the best restaurant recipes on them, and I couldn't catch one of them. This wasn't a good sign.

Saturday morning found me bright-eyed, ready to watch cooking shows on the local public television station. Several of the shows had chefs as guest hosts, and these were happy to share some of their well known restaurant recipes on television. They seemed happy and eager to share how to prepare such good food with the rest of us. I was so encouraged, and started to plan my summer of starting a collection of restaurant recipes. It was going to be a great summer!
