On the Trail of Restaurant RecipesI originally planned to drive to the larger cities near my town, staying within two or three states, for about a two hundred mile radius. As I had most of the summer off, I could spend a few nights in each city, and try out new food and collect the restaurant recipes that would be enjoyed in our town. Since most of the people in town have lived in this area all of their lives, the restaurant recipes from nearby cities would be familiar and might be more acceptable to my friends and neighbors. However, the more I thought about what places I would like to visit, the greater my plans grew. The Internet is a terrible and wonderful thing. I found banana cream pies in Tennessee, barbecue in Texas, and wonderful and unusual food in California. California? Going all the way across the country to get some restaurant recipes to bring home? I think my plans were growing larger than one person could possibly do. In addition to this, my plans consisted entirely of sitting in a car, driving, and then eating. Oh yes, and sleeping. I would probably gain fifty pounds by the time I collected fifty restaurant recipes... one pound per recipe, or thereabouts. I brought my car down to have my mechanic make sure it was roadworthy. I laid out maps of different states all over the dining room table, and also laid out the printouts of several restaurants that I had visited in the past, or really wanted to visit. Telling myself to be conservative, I designed a route that went through New England, down the east coast, and out west to California. That wasn't my definition of conservative, but I simply couldn't pick a particular place to turn around; there were too many other wonderful places to sample food from and get their restaurant recipes. Perhaps if I talked to some of my friends about my choices, they would let me know the kinds of foods they were interested in, and those that they wouldn't really want to eat. For being New Englanders all of their lives, they were very interested in trying many new foods that they had never had before. My friends tended to fall into two groups: those that wanted lots of healthy food in their restaurant recipes, and those that wanted to specialize in desserts. Maybe it would have been better if I hadn't got their expectations up. I did get all their email addresses, however, and in some ways my trip was now going to be a joint effort. No one was actually going with me, but I had a whole group that would try the restaurant recipes as I sent them home via email. As Willie Nelson would say, here I go "On the Road Again"! Comments |
